LOCAL INITIATIVES UPDATE

Community News: Meeting with the Local Scouts (Sept. 24, 2026)

At Rescue for Life International (RLI), our mission is to provide a "Shelter of Hope" for local women and children when life runs dry. As a new nonprofit establishing our roots in the Ellicott City area, we were deeply grateful for the recent opportunity to connect directly with the community. We had the absolute privilege of being invited by Den Leader Sylvia Beeken to speak with a wonderful group of scouts in the Library at veteran's elementary school.

Sharing Our Mission with the Next Generation

The scouts came ready with incredible questions about what it takes to protect vulnerable community members in crisis. We walked them through the core realities of local emergencies and the concrete solutions RLI deploys every single day:

  • Addressing Immediate Essentials: When sudden economic collapse, unexpected evictions, or domestic instability strike, home is no longer safe. Families often have to leave dangerous situations immediately, creating an urgent need for food, clean clothes, a warm bed, and basic hygiene items that very night. Beyond physical goods, we shared that their greatest unseen needs are Hope and Safety.

  • How Our Programs Protect Neighbors: We explained how our Emergency Motel Placement system uses rapid motel vouchers to bypass traditional 30-day administrative documentation delays, immediately placing displaced families into temporary emergency accommodations for 14 days.

  • The Hope Center Early Childhood Initiative: We discussed the reality of "Hidden Need"—hard-working, middle-income parents who work grueling shifts but struggle to afford local housing and daycare costs. Because they are employed, they do not qualify for government aid, yet everything in our area is incredibly expensive. RLI breaks this cycle by providing a safe, heavily subsidized early childhood learning center on a sliding scale so local parents can go to work with complete peace of mind.

  • Driven Entirely by Unpaid Volunteers: We shared a behind-the-scenes look at how RLI operates. Our leadership team consists of just 3 people operating as 100% unpaid volunteers. To protect the integrity of the mission, our team actually works the overnight shift at an Amazon Warehouse to cover our personal expenses and the overhead of the RLI office, ensuring that every donation given goes straight to helping families in crisis.

The "Backpack Challenge" Lessons

To show the scouts how we pack our emergency units, we ran a hands-on activity called the Backpack Challenge. We threw some "trick" items into the mix to see if the scouts could separate what truly helps a family in a real crisis from what doesn't. While they mixed up a few things at first, our team helped them sort through the gear and understand the vital strategic reasons behind every choice.

Here is what the scouts discovered once the challenge was complete:

  • The Essentials: Traumatized families need items they can use immediately with zero prep time. Clean water, quick snacks (pretzels/juice), basic hygiene items (soap/toothbrushes), and thermal protection (blankets/beanies) are absolute, lifesaving must-haves.

  • The Deficiencies: The scouts learned that a flashlight with dead batteries or a missing first-aid kit causes a dangerous team breakdown. In emergency response work, equipment must be actively verified and tested before heading out into the field, not just packed blindly.

  • The Non-Essentials: The "trick" items included a heavy book, a desk stapler, and gaming remotes. The scouts quickly realized that heavy books or electronics are completely useless when there is no electricity or cell service. They just add dead weight, cause physical fatigue, and slow families down when safety depends on fast transit times. Most importantly, they learned that offering useless items to a family facing an acute emergency is an insult to their dignity when what they desperately need is real, functional relief.

Immediate Mission Launched: The Scout Kindness Drive!

To channel the scouts' incredible energy into real-world action, we officially launched a Scout Kindness Drive with the den! We have challenged the scouts to help fill our office shelves with kindness by packing the exact, verified Essential items they learned about:

Clean & Fresh (Hygiene Items):

  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste

  • Soap, body wash, or shampoo

  • Deodorant

For the Little Ones (Baby & Kids):

  • Diapers (especially sizes 4, 5, and 6)

  • Baby wipes

  • Brand new socks and underwear (all kids' sizes)

Quick Snacks (Non-Perishable Food):

  • Granola bars or fruit snacks

  • Macaroni and cheese boxes

  • Canned soups or stews

We equipped Den Leader Sylvia Beeken with our official Kindness Drive Checklist so the scouts can run a school or neighborhood drive for the items our mobile crisis units need most urgently right now.

A Referral Resource for Our Community

As RLI continues to grow its presence and establish its roots here, we welcome your continued community backing. Beyond raising support, please use us as a direct referral resource. If you, your family, or any Scout families encounter someone in our community experiencing an acute housing or emergency crisis, please refer them to us so our Mobile Crisis Team can step in and provide a safe, warm place to be.

Thank you again to Den Leader Sylvia Beeken and the entire den for a wonderful, impactful session! Together, we can be a Shelter of Hope for moms and kids when life runs dry.

Birdland & Benevolence: Coming Together for Crisis Response

Game day in Baltimore brings our community together like nothing else. On August 20, the Rescue for Life International team headed out to Camden Yards to share a fantastic night of baseball and community spirit!

Team Night at Camden Yards: The Rescue for Life International team came together at the Baltimore Orioles game on August 20! Spot us in our bright green organizational tees and orange Orioles floppy hats. Taking a quick moment to connect outside of our daily crisis response work reminds us of the community bond that drives our mission forward.

Stepping Off the Frontlines to Connect as a Team

While thousands cheered on the Orioles, our dedicated staff spent the evening sitting together, enjoying the game, and bonding as a team—reflecting on our ongoing mission to support families across Maryland and beyond who are quietly facing their toughest moments.

At Rescue for Life International, we believe no one should face a crisis alone. From our Ellicott City headquarters, our daily mission is simple: provide immediate, sliding-scale, and unconditional care to protect human life whenever and wherever disaster strikes. Taking a moment to connect as a team at the ballpark reminds us of the strong community bonds that make our work possible.

Continue the Mission With Us

The game is over, but our vital work back home in Central Maryland never stops. You can always stand with our team and help us provide critical safety to vulnerable women and children:

Share: Spread the word to anyone needing unconditional, safe shelter.
